Competition season is one of the most thrilling times in a dancer's year. The anticipation, the hard work, and the joy of performing all come together in a few special weekends. But preparation is key to making sure your dancer shines on stage.
1. Start Early with Conditioning
Physical preparation should begin weeks before the first competition. Encourage your dancer to maintain their flexibility, strength, and stamina through regular practice and cross-training activities. At Empower, we incorporate conditioning into every class to ensure our dancers are performance-ready year-round.
2. Practice Performance Mindset
Dancing in the studio is different from dancing on stage. Help your dancer practice performing with full energy and expression during every run-through. Visualization techniques can also help dancers mentally prepare for the stage environment.
3. Organize Costumes and Supplies
Create a competition checklist that includes all costumes, accessories, makeup, and emergency supplies. Pack everything the night before and do a final check in the morning. Nothing derails confidence like a missing costume piece!
4. Prioritize Rest and Nutrition
The weeks leading up to competition should include plenty of sleep and balanced nutrition. Dancers need fuel for their demanding schedules, and well-rested bodies perform better and are less prone to injury.
5. Focus on the Joy
While competition can feel high-stakes, remind your dancer that the true goal is to share their art and have fun. The best performances come from dancers who are genuinely enjoying themselves on stage.
At Empower by Bella Ballet, we believe that competition is about growth, not just winning. Our dancers learn to set personal goals, support their teammates, and celebrate every achievement—big or small.
